International Classical Ballet Teacher, Coach & Répétiteur
A native of Union Springs, Alabama, Chapman graduated from Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1983 with the Duane Dushion Award and the Prix d’excellence de Danse Award. After dancing for Alabama Ballet for one season Chapman joined American Ballet Theatre in 1984 as a member of the corps de ballet. He was promoted to Soloist in 1987 and to Principal Dancer in 1989. With ABT, Chapman performed all the leading roles in the ballet repertoire and in works by many of the twentieth century’s master choreographers, including George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jiri Kylian, Fredrick Ashton, Mats Ek, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, Merce Cunningham and Antony Tudor. He also created leading roles in Clark Tippet’s Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 and Twyla Tharp’s The Elements. Chapman has appeared in Dance in America, the film Dancers and the documentary Ballet as well as numerous television shows and featured on national news broadcasts. In 1993, he joined the Bavarian National Ballet as a principal dancer before returning to ABT in 1995. Chapman appeared with Hamburg Ballet, English National Ballet, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and Finnish National Ballet as a guest star.
In 1996, Chapman was named Artistic Director of Alabama Ballet. During his leadership, the company grew from 16 to 44 professional and apprentice dancers. He also founded the Alabama Ballet School, the apprentice pre-professional training program, Alabama Ballet Summer Program and Gorham’s Bluff Summer Residency. In 1999 Alabama Ballet moved to a new state of the art dance facility with administration, costume shop and four dance studios, in 2006 two additional studios were added to accommodate the school and company’s growth. Chapman received the Distinguished Career Award from the University of Alabama in 1998, Birmingham Business Journal Top 40 Under 40 in 2004, named Alabama Arts Ambassador by Governor Bill Riley in 2007. Chapman restaged for Alabama Ballet many of the full-length classical ballets including Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and Coppelia as well as various one act works such as Paquita, Raymonda Act III and Carnival in Venice. Chapman acquired Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, stared in Alabama Public Television’s Jekyll and Hyde, and the Making of Romeo and Juliet.
Mr. Chapman returned to ABT as ballet master in 2006 before being named Artistic Director of ABT II in 2007-2011. Chapman oversees the ABT Summer Intensive at the University of Texas Austin, hosted ABT’s Works and Process at the Guggenheim Museum, Young People’s Ballet Workshop and ABTKids. He also performed with ABT in various character roles. In 2009 to present he serves as Artistic Advisor and choreographer for the National production of The Nutcracker in San Jose, Costa Rica, International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi Advisory Board, sat on National Endowment for the Arts grant review panels and judges for Universal Ballet Competition and Youth American Grand Prix. He also serves as a national spokesperson for Regional Dance America and as dance advisor for Angelina Ballerina©. As of 2016 he serves as Dance Chairman for Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham.

Chapman, geboren in Union Springs/Alabama, schloß sein Studium des klassischen Tanzes an der Alabama School of Fine Arts im Jahre 1983 mit höchster Auszeichnung ab; mit dem “Duane Dushion Award und dem “Prix d´excellence de Danse Award”. Nach einer Spielzeit mit dem Alabama Ballet, wurde Chapman 1984 vom American Ballet Theater (ABT) als Mitglied des corps de ballet aufgenommen. Der Aufstieg zum Solotänzer fand im Jahr 1987 statt und wurde zwei Jahre später, 1989, mit Beförderung zum Principal Dancer fortgesetzt. Mit ABT übernahm Chapman sowohl alle Hauptrollen des Ballet-Repertoires, sowie die Arbeiten und Stücke aller Meister-Choreographen des 20. Jahrhunderts, unter anderem George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jiri Killian, Frederick Ashton, Mats Ek, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, Merce Cunningham und Antony Tudor.
Ebenfalls kreierte und entwarf er Hauptrollen für Clark Tippet´s Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 und Twyla Tharp´s The Elements. Chapman ist ausserdem bekannt durch seine Auftritte in Dance in America, dem Film Dancers, der Dokumentation Ballet, sowie aus zahlreichen TV-Shows und nationalen Nachrichtensendungen.
1993 schloß er sich dem Bayerischen National Ballett als Principal Dancer an, bevor er 1995 zu ABT zurückkehrte. Desweiteren trat Chapman mit dem Hamburger Ballett, dem Englischen National Ballett, dem Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires und dem Finnischen National Ballett als Gaststar auf.
1996 wurde Chapman zum künstlerischen Leiter und Direktor des Alabama Ballet ernannt. Unter seiner Leitung wuchs das Ensemble von 16 auf 44 professionelle und auszubildende Tänzer an. 1998 erhielt Chapman den Distinguished Career Award der Universität von Alabama, 2004 nahm ihn das Birmingham Business Journal in seine Liste der „Top 40 Under 40” auf und im Jahr 2007 ernannte Governor Bill Riley ihn zum Alabama Arts Ambassador.
Chapman setze für das Alabama Ballet zahlreiche abendfüllende, klassische Balletts neu in Szene, unter anderem Schwanensee, Don Quixote, Dornröschen, Giselle und Coppelia, aber auch verschiedene Kurzstücke, wie Paquita, Raymonda Akt III und Carnival in Venice. Ihm gelang es ausserdem für das Alabama Ballet die Aufführungsrechte für Balanchine´s Der Nußknacker zu erwerben. Desweiteren übernahm er Hauptrollen für das öffentliche TV Alabama in Jekyll and Hyde und der Dokumentation Making of Romeo and Juliet.
Nach einer 1-jährigen Anstellung (2006) als Ballet Master wurde Mr. Chapman 2007 zum künstlerischen Leiter von ABT II ernannt, welches er bis 2011 leitete. Chapman betreut und leitet außerdem das ABT Summer Intensive an der Universität von Austin (Texas) und moderiert ABT´s Works and Process am Guggenheim Museum in New York. Er fungiert auch Gastgeber und Moderator von Young People´s Ballet Workshop und ABTKids.
Weitere Funktionen am American Ballet Theater beinhalten auch Auftreten mit ABT in verschiedenen Charakterrollen, sowie regelmäßige Übernahme des Ensembleunterrichts. Desweiteren ist er nationaler Sprecher und Vertreter für Regional Dance America, sowie Ratgeber und Betreuer in tänzerischen Fragen für Angelina Ballerina©.
